Overview

New hires often feel overwhelmed when starting a new job, especially if they are unfamiliar with the local area. Imagine a new hire arriving at your company office, unsure of where the nearest coffee shops, restaurants, or essential services are located. This can lead to unnecessary stress and decreased productivity during their initial days. Providing them with a way to navigate their new surroundings can enhance their onboarding experience.

By creating an interactive map using Google Maps, you can effectively engage new hires and help them become acquainted with their new environment. An interactive map can guide them to key locations, making their transition smoother and more enjoyable.

Steps on how to create an interactive map with Google Maps

→ Start creating your map

Go to Google Maps website: maps.google.com.

Click on the menu icon (three horizontal lines) and select 'Your places'.

Navigate to the 'Maps' tab and click on 'Create Map'.

Fill in the map

Add a Name and Description

Provide a name and description for your map (1). This information will be visible to users in AppicalNow.

Search for Places

Use the search function (3) to find specific locations. If you want to highlight an area not already marked, simply click on the map to create a custom marker. You can also add descriptions for each location to provide additional context.

Create Layers

Organize various points of interest (POIs) by creating layers (2). For instance, create one layer for the Appical office and another for local restaurants and cash machines. You can customize layers with different colours to differentiate between types of locations.

Exporting the map to AppicalNow

Once you’ve marked all the desired locations, click on the 'Share' button in the map settings.

Note (if applicable): If you encounter an error while trying to retrieve the embed code, follow the provided troubleshooting steps on the bottom of this article: Troubleshooting Embed this Map Error.

'Save' your changes and return to the map.

Adding the Map to Your AppicalNow Course

In the AppicalNow editor, create an Embed page in the relevant chapter of your course.

Paste the embed code into the text field labeled 'Paste your code here'.

Create or update your page.
