Appical is committed to providing an accessible digital environment for all its users. We believe it is important that everyone can easily access and use our information and services online, regardless of personal circumstances or the assistive technologies they may use.
→ Compliance Status
The Appical web application is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2. This means that most of the application meets accessibility standards, but there are currently some elements that do not fully satisfy all success criteria.
Appical is actively working to address these issues with the goal of making the application fully accessible to all users.
→ Accessibility Audit
An independent accessibility audit of the Appical web application was conducted by Bureau Toegankelijkheid, a specialized agency in digital accessibility and inclusion. The audit followed the international WCAG-EM methodology (Website Accessibility Conformance Evaluation Methodology) and was based on WCAG 2.2 guidelines, levels A and AA.
Of the 111 findings identified across the initial and follow-up audits, 101 have been resolved. The remaining 10 are currently in progress or scheduled for remediation.
📌 Known Limitations
Despite the measures taken, the following accessibility limitations are still present:
Drag-and-drop assignment (Assign page): When assigning items by dragging or using the move buttons, screen readers don't clearly announce what the movement means or confirm the new selection, making the outcome hard to follow without sight.
Animated GIFs (Chapter pages): Some GIF animations play on a continuous loop with no option to pause or stop them, which may affect users with vestibular disorders or cognitive sensitivities.
Language switching (interface-wide): When the interface is set to Dutch, non-Dutch terms (such as product names) are still read using Dutch pronunciation rules by screen readers, which can affect clarity.
Background images (Journey and Story overview pages): Some background images used for chapters and stories aren't recognized correctly by assistive technology, so their content isn't announced to screen reader users.
Account menu navigation (mobile): The back button in the account menu doesn't always return users to the correct previous screen.
Menu display in landscape mode (mobile): The account menu doesn't collapse properly in landscape orientation, which can make some items hard to reach.
Section labeling (Story overview): Chapter lists aren't always accompanied by a clear descriptive heading, which can make navigation harder for screen reader users.
Video transcripts: The video editor doesn't yet support adding transcripts for video or audio content.
Audio descriptions: The video editor doesn't yet support adding audio description tracks for visual-only content in videos.
